You can download different training programs for each link of a race based on your goals from the Polar website, polarpersonaltrainer.com. You can also upload your training data wirelessly to your computer and the website. All of the screens are customizable on the RCX5 so you can display only the data that you feel is relevant to your training.

The RCX5 makes sure you train at the right level, beeping you when you stray outside of the target pulse rate zone. It also helps you stick to a target pace, notifying you if you drop under the pace and letting you know that you’ll need to pick it up if you want to meet your goal. You can easily see on the watch screen how many minutes ahead or behind the pace you are.

A really nice feature of the Polar RCX5 is that it uses a specially designed hybrid transmitter that will accurately record your heart rate data while you are swimming. For biking it also has a cadence measure you can track your pedaling rate in revolutions per minute.

As for battery life, there’s no need to worry here as the RCX5 doesn’t use rechargeable batteries. So you’ll get 8-11 months on a single set of batteries depending on use.

The Polar RCX5 also has a full featured GPS function. You can see the distance you’ve traveled, how fast you’re moving, and plot out a route on a map using the Polar website.

Conclusion

All of the top athletes no matter what the sport have personal coaches. These coaches will always tell their athletes exactly when they are overworking, or under working their hearts. Now you can have your own virtual electronic coach and training partner on your wrist with a triathlon heart rate monitor. This coach will be with you round the clock, all year round, whenever you want him.

Whether you are a beginner or have been training a while, a triathlon cardiac speed gauge can help you measure and monitor the right exercise intensity for your training. You can then adjust your training based on scientific data about your heart. In the end you’ll be swimming, biking, and running faster than you ever thought possible.

And that’s what it’s all about.

3. Suunto t6d

The first triathlon heart rate monitor that I’d recommend, coming in at number three on the list is the Suunto t6d. This is the latest multi-sport monitor to come out of Suunto, replacing the t6c. I have a full Suunto t6c in-depth analysis on this site and soon I’ll have a full review of the t6d for you to check out as well.

The Suunto t6d offers full GPS capability with an optional POD, and it gives you multiple readouts of various physiological functions. You’ll be able to measure not only your heart rate but also your excess post-exercise oxygen consumption level (EPOC) which can help you adjust your training to ensure you get the maximum benefit from each workout without overtraining.

The t6d also has an altimeter to measure how you perform at various altitudes, as well as monitoring of your distance, speed, and cadence with an optional POD. It will also record your calorie consumption. You can transfer all of this data to your computer using a USB cable and load it up to the Movescount.com website for further analysis.

The t6d is great for running. For biking you need to order the optional bike POD if your monitor does not come with it in a package. Be sure to check for this. As for swimming you’ll need to purchase the Suunto memory belt. This device hooks to your chest and will accurately collect all of your pulse rate data without the wrist unit. This eliminates any potential interference in the water that will garble the signal between the wrist monitor and the standard chest strap.

Keep in mind that the Suunto t6d has a number of really good features for all of the triathlon sports, however you need to purchase each sports specific POD separately. If you want all of them, it can really increase the price of the total Suunto package pretty significantly. The good thing though is that you won’t be getting and paying for something you’ll never use, which would be the case if all of these devices were already built in to the basic package.

To check on the latest prices for all of the peripheral devices and the Suunto t6d cardiovascular rate computerclick here.

2. Garmin Forerunner 910XT

Garmin has a whole slew of excellent heart rate monitors and you can put the Garmin Forerunner 910XT right at the top of the list in the multisport training category. The 910XT is the next generation, latest model upgrade to the popular Garmin 310XT. The 910XT records an amazing array of data for swimming, biking, and running and you can easily switch recording information for each sport with the push of just one button.

Overall the Garmin 910XT is a fantastic training computer however, it will not record pulse rate data while you’re swimming. It does record a lot of other cool info like stroke count, swim distance in open water, and your SWOLF score which is a measure of swimming efficiency. (Your SWOLF score combines the number of strokes you take and your time for a 25 yard swim. This means that the 910XT can accurately measure the number of strokes you take, which is pretty amazing.) You’ll even be able to see the path you swam out in open water using the Garmin Connect website. There is a setting for a lap pool and for open water. But, if you are interested in heart rate data while you swim, you won’t get it with the 910XT. If this is really important to you, then you need to look at the Polar RCX5, which I talk about above.

Some of the other features of the Garmin 910XT include time, speed, and distance recording on the bike and while running, and an altimeter for measuring elevation. The 910XT will vibrate to alert you when you stray outside of your goals, like your target heart beat range or pace. It will also tell you when you reach a split. The monitor has rechargeable batteries that will last for about 20 hours on a full charge.

The Garmin 910XT even has a body composition testing function that will record your body fat percentage, weight, and water percentage along with 6 additional measures. All of this information can be sent to your computer wirelessly through an ANT+ connection.

Disadvantages

Sometimes, too much data collected by these gadgets can confuse rather than guide you when training. Some people quit training before long because they feel intimidated by all these details. If this is the case and you are just starting out with a monitor, you should go with a simple model without a ton of features.

A triathlon pulse beat monitor is an investment and not cheap. However if you look at it in comparison to some of the other training equipment you have to buy, like your bike and its accessories, then a monitor is not all that expensive.

Things to Look for When Shopping

One of the things that you need to consider when buying a monitor for triathlons is its efficiency. Some low quality monitors come with straps that may not be accurate. Keep in mind that many require electrode gel to get a proper reading. As a thumb rule, read monitor reviews to see how other users rate the product before buying.

Special Features

Look for special features in each monitor that you may need to use. Look out for functions like calorie counting so if your goal is to lose weight you’ll know how many calories you’re burning. Check to see if the monitor can be used with a treadmill. Many treadmills support the display of heart rate details when you’re training indoors.

Additional features that you may look for include GPS function, data comparison in multi sports and the ability to download your data to your computer or a training website for further analysis. These additional features may not be essential, but they are great to have. You can read more about selecting a monitor by reading my article on Features to Consider Before You Buy A Heart Rate Monitor.

Cost

Most good triathlon watches will range in price from $200 – $400 and up depending on the monitor’s features and brand name. You need to know what you want, and avoid paying for features that you will never use. Most often, a simple cost effective model will do fine when the only information you need is your pulse rate.

Usable In The Water

This is the key feature for triathlon monitors. If you can’t use the monitor in the water, then it’s not really for triathletes. Most watches are waterproof however the problem lies in the transfer of data from the chest strap to the wrist watch. Under water the signal gets distorted so you don’t get an accurate recording of your heart rate on the wrist receiver. Some monitors have an attachment that you can hook onto the chest strap that eliminates the need for wireless data transfer through the water, whereas others may have a signal booster. These are perfect for recording your heart rate data while swimming.

Long Battery Life

Triathlons can go on a long time and your training can go on even longer. Whether you’re training for a sprint distance (750 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike, 5 km run) or a full Ironman (3.86 km swim, 180 km bike, 26.2 run) you are going to need a lot of battery power. Before you buy check the battery life on rechargeable monitors. Look for something that will last for 12 hours plus on a full charge.

User Friendliness

A good triathlon heart monitor should provide comfort and ease of use. Several features combine to make this possible. The chest strap should fit you comfortably, not too tight and not too loose. Also the wrist unit should fit your wrist properly. Some older units, especially the early GPS models, looked like you strapped a wall clock to your wrist. Newer models feature the latest micro-technology are much smaller and look more like hyped up sports watches.

Display Size and Readability

A bold display is very important. Ensure that your monitor is easily readable from any angle, as well as in different light settings. The last thing you want to do during your training is have to squint to take the monitor’s reading. A backlight is also good to have as you may be training early in the morning or late at night in the dark.

Button Size

Most people overlook this; however, larger buttons do make the monitor easier to operate. This is more significant if you are actively using various functions and features of the device during your training and switching back and forth between screens of data. It’s also helpful to have large buttons when you are out training in the cold and using gloves.

The reviews on the popular retailer sites are positive with the exception of some users who either did not understand how to use the functions, or had very different expectations. One user was dissatisfied with the number of lines of information on the screen, however this feature is customizable. The RS300X has a zoom function which you can use to control how much data is presented on the screen at one time. For a couple of others, the amount of real-time data provided was simply more than they needed or wanted. I of course would rather have too much data than not enough.

The only other knock against the RS300X, and I agree with this one, is that you have to take or send it to a Polar service center to have the battery in the wrist unit replaced. The battery should last 1-2 years depending on use. If you get really dependent on the RS300X for training, then having to send it to a service center and not be able to use it for a week or so, can be a real pain.

Best Place To Buy

I found the best deal for the RS300X on Amazon.com. They sell a lot of these monitors because almost no one can beat their low prices. You’ll also be able to pick up any accessories you may need, like the Polar FlowLink that will let you connect the device to your computer. This is not included with the base unit. You can also buy any running or training accessories you need on Amazon and all of it will ship to you on time, for free. I’ve never had a bad experience buying from Amazon.
Optional Hardware Creates the Total Experience

What makes the Polar RS300X stand out so brilliantly among its competitors is its cutting edge functions. Adding to the RS300X’s impressive lineup of features, Polar introduced two compatible products that when used in conjunction with the heart rate monitor, will let you track speed, distance and biometrics simultaneously. The S1 foot pod lets you enjoy real-time data regarding your pace and distance traveled. This is a wonderful tool for dedicated runners who count every second and are constantly looking for ways to shave time off of their personal bests. Click here to check on prices for the Polar RS300X SD cardiac speed calculator with S1 Foot Pod.

Alternately, people who enjoy activities such as cycling, inline skating, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, or hiking will get a great deal of use and enjoyment from the G1 GPS sensor which will provide you with speed and distance tracking. You can check on prices and read more information about the Polar RS300X G1 with G1 GPS Sensorby clicking here.

The nice thing about making these pods optional is that if you don’t think you’ll need them, you don’t have to buy them. There’s nothing worse than buying a high tech expensive heart rate monitor with a ton of features and then find out you only want to use half of them. The Polar RS300X is completely customizable to your needs.

These incredible optional items can greatly improve your exercise or training regimen by providing helpful data as it is happening. The overall combination of optional equipment, recording of prior exercise data, and the OwnCal feature help you stay on track and remain productive, making significant gains more easily reachable.

More Great Features of the Polar RS300X

Polar didn’t just stop at the helpful features listed above. In addition they created options such as the audible and visual alarm that can be programmed to alert you when your pulse rate falls below or above the predetermined levels. Many athletes and everyday exercisers set very short term goals that determine their immediate workout. The alarm helps you to stay within the intensity levels you wish to train at. If your workout of the day is supposed to be intense with your cardiac rate in a very high zone, then the RS300X will beep you if you are going too slow and your heart rate is not high enough. It basically acts like a coach telling you to pick up the pace. It will do the same if you are going too hard by beeping you to back off a little. This will help prevent overtraining.

On the subject of heart beat, the Polar RS300X has multiple ways for you to display it. The options are to show the percentage of the maximum heart rate, the amount of beats per minute, and the average pulse rate throughout the duration of the total exercise.

Comparative features such as the total time spent within a predetermined target zone and the total time spent exercising work together to give you more constructive feedback. Using the two together offers a broader perspective of the overall progress towards a specific goal.

Some other features that are an added bonus to the great benefits already mentioned are the 99 lap recording capacity, which is ideal for analyzing split training. If you need more data you can simply download all of your training information to your computer and add it to the Polar website at PolarPersonalTrainer.com. If you wish to upload your data to your computer then you need to buy the Polar Flowlink, which is not included with this model. It’s about $40 or so. Again, like with the pods, if you don’t feel the need to analyze your training data on your computer then you won’t need to buy this. Polar gives you the option to customize your monitor to your needs.

The RS300X also has a watch setting equipped with a dual time zone, an alarm with snooze option, and a stopwatch. The Polar RS300X resists water up to 50 feet and has a backlit display with zoom capabilities. Just to keep the fires of motivations stoked the RS300X also has an event countdown feature to be set to something worth training for, like an upcoming race. Each time you see the date looming closer, the desire to improve will be reignited.

What Are Others Saying?

Overall, customers who have bought the Timex Ironman claim to be quite satisfied with their purchase. Half the reviewers on major outlet sites give it a perfect rating, while only ten percent rank it as a poor product. On Amazon.com over 115 owners rate the Ironman on average 4 out of 5 stars, which is excellent. Amateur athletes who compete in high-intensity cardiovascular activities such as mini-marathons or Iron Man competitions report that it offers an excellent analysis of their performance over time.

Owners talk about how the numbers are large enough that they can be easily seen while exercising, even through swimming goggles or sunglasses, making it excellent for those who want to get out and do more than take laps around a track. They also say how easy the screens are to scroll though and how easy the watch is to setup and program.

The Timex Ironman Road Trainer Gets 3.5 out of 5 stars

There were a few negative comments about the Road Trainer. Some customers report that the battery life has been erratic and consistently needs to be charged or even changed out. However, one customer suggests that those who report the battery running down quickly make the mistake of storing it within six feet of the chest strap (which records the physical heart rate) while leaving both devices on, so that wrist unit automatically takes recordings and wears down the battery.

Others claim that the heart monitor can fluctuate and cause imprecise readings. It may be in these cases that the chest strap is not securely against their skin as they train. Many others claim to have no problem with their pulse rates being accurately recorded.

Another slight negative is that the Ironman cannot be directly connected to a home computer to download or upload data without purchasing the optional Data Recorder. Other manufacturers including Polar often have optional data links as well. I personally prefer to have the option. If you don’t want to load your training data to your computer to really analyze it and see it on a nice chart, then you shouldn’t have to pay for that feature. If you do want that level of analysis then you can buy the extra upgrade that Timex provides.

Then there are two mid-sized models, the T5K213 which as a silver line around the face, and T5K214 which has a blue line. All of the models have the same features and a black wrist band.

There are few things more difficult than keeping track of how many laps you are on or how long you have spent on a workout. That is why your gym likely has clocks on every wall, to let everyone know how long they’ve been working out. The Timex Road Trainer has an excellent memory system that can track either the time you spend exercising or the number of laps you take on the track. This allows you to not only measure the performance of your heart rate over time, but monitor the workout itself. The Ironman will calculate and record your performance over fifty laps or intervals and how you have performed cumulatively for one hundred hours. However you want to chart your workout, the Ironman has a system that can help you out.

With the Timex Ironman you also have the option to purchase a Data Recorder which lets you upload your data to your computer, graph it, and analyze it further using the Timex Trainer software that comes with the Ironman monitor. The Data Recorder basically serves as an additional external memory as well by recording heart rate, speed, and distance for multiple workouts.
Nice looking watch – You can wear the Ironman as a fashion accessory in addition to using it as a training watch.

Comfortable chest strap – The strap stays in place and is adjustable for all body types.

Easy to scroll through different data screens – It’s very easy to show the data that you want to see on the screen.

Priced low – At under $70 the Timex Ironman Road Trainer is a great buy.

The Bad

No interactive website available – All of the other manufacturers like Polar and Garmin have their own websites where you can upload your data and interact with other members. I’m not sure why Timex hasn’t done the same yet.

No GPS – With GPS the cost of this watch would go up significantly, but it would still be nice to have this option. However many people don’t feel like they need GPS and advanced mapping features.

The model that makes it to the top of my worst list is the BowFlex Classic. I’m sure you’ve all heard of Bowflex. They’re the company that makes all kinds of so-called fitness machines and home gyms. You know the story; work out for 20 minutes 3 times a week doing some cable pulls and stretching with some bands on the BowFlex machine and in 6 weeks you’ll have ripped abs, a tight butt and 7% body fat. Good luck with that.

I prefer the old school way that actually works, which is just a lot of hard work and sweat – running, biking, swimming, or weight training with free weights. Of course if you’re 300 pounds and haven’t worked out in years, if ever, then the BowFlex is not a bad start – better than sitting on the couch. Anyway, BowFlex apparently decided to move into the heart tempo gauge market.

In the promotional material on the BowFlex Classic strapless monitor they talk about getting the most out of your workouts. They say how the BowFlex can easily calculate your average and maximum heart rate with just the press of one button. The monitor also features a timer that you can use for counting down your workout and for interval training. The watch will also show your last 20 cardio rate readings along with 42 of your latest laps. There’s even a special light for night workouts and an alarm function that chimes when you stray from your target pulse rate. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, when you look at some of the owner reviews, another story comes out.

The BowFlex monitor got an average of 1.9 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com, with over 73% of the ratings coming in at 2 or below, which is very poor. Most owners had a real problem with getting the heart rate monitor function to work correctly. You have to put your fingers on the back of the watch to get a reading, which can be a real pain if you’re in the middle of your workout. You basically have to stop for a few seconds so that the BowFlex can pick up a reading. And from what most people say, you are lucky if it gets any reading at all. The other functions like the timer and the alarm clock seemed to work OK, but of course you can get all of that with any $20 watch. When you’re paying over $300 for a cardio velocity checker, you want it to work.

There were also reports of the strap breaking. Many owners even received the wrong product and some had mismatched instruction manuals. How’d you like to try to set up a watch with the wrong instructions! To top things off, the people that tried to contact BowFlex customer service had long wait times, if they even got through, and when they were able to talk to someone, the customer service was horrible. So the bottom line is stay away from this one.

You can read more about the Bowflex Classic Strapless pulse tempo gaugehere.

So there you have it; the worst heart rate monitors. Save your money and avoid these and invest in something that is worthwhile and will last and provide you with an accurate measure of your cardiovascular rate. Accuracy and reliability are essential for recording and analyzing your heart rate and improving your overall fitness level. There are many excellent, high quality models on the market that can help you get in better shape and run, bike, or swim faster. Just look around the rest of this site, especially my article on the highest rated cardio devices, and find a high quality cardio tempo computer that will work for you.

With a ring monitor you don’t need to put your fingers onto the unit because it’s supposed to record your pulse rate directly from your finger while you wear it just like a ring. Sounds pretty neat in theory right? Well, guess again because these types of models almost always get poor reviews and rarely ever work right. And unfortunately the LifeSpan Fitness heart pace recording device is no exception.

On paper the LifeSpan sounds good. Apparently it uses some type of infrared technology to measure your heart rate. It is also very comfortable with a finger insert made of soft silicone gel that will fit any finger size. It also comes with a stopwatch function, and a standard clock. And with just 2 buttons it’s easy to use. It is designed to continuously read your heart rate as you workout. But how does it measure up on accuracy? Well owner reviews quickly show problems.

The LifeSpan Fitness Ring gets an average rating of 2 out of 5 stars with over 76% of reviewers give it a dismal 1 or 2 stars. Most people say you can’t use it while you exercise because it’s so inaccurate and you get grossly skewed readings the faster your heart beats. Users tested it by simply manually checking their cardio rate using two fingers on their wrists and by using very accurate chest strap monitors. One reviewer even talked about how the LifeSpan monitor showed his pulse rate going down as he started to work out. I wish my heart rate would that – I’d be blazing some 4 minute miles if that were the case.

On the good side the LifeSpan does seem to work very well when you are not exercising but just sitting. Great. Oh, and don’t get this model wet either because it’s not water proof or resistant. So if you sweat on it, it will apparently stop working – another real plus for this gem. My advice; save your $30 and look elsewhere for an accurate monitor. It also has a stopwatch and regular clock to time your workouts as well as a nice storage case to protect it. You can set the alarm to beep when you stray outside of your target heart rate. Sounds great, but looking closer though reveals the common problems I’ve seen with ring cardiovascular speed calculators.

Owners talk about their Dr. Leonard’s heart rate monitor not working at all while they work out or recording grossly inaccurate cardio rate readings. Some even couldn’t get it to work while they were sitting down doing nothing. A few people were not even able to get the ring monitor to fit their fingers, saying it was not adjustable. Overall the reviews came in at 2.2 out of 5 stars, which is very poor.
